Proven Setups, Tests & Full Breakdowns
This hub serves as your central library for all trading strategies. It includes everything from classic indicator-based setups to discretionary methods and historical backtesting. Whether you’re researching new strategies or validating existing ones, this section provides complete breakdowns. You will learn how each method works, where it performs well, and the conditions under which it commonly fails.
The Profit Machine
Starting with the indexes, this video shows how you can beat a standard buy-and-hold strategy on the NASDAQ with simple rules. You can consistently outperform the market. Introducing the QQQ Trading Strategy That Beats the Market.
A simple 200-day moving average strategy on QQQ delivered 791% returns. In contrast, a buy-and-hold strategy yielded just 428% over a 24-year period from 2000 to 2024. That's nearly double the performance, with only a 28.6% maximum drawdown. This is compared to a devastating 83% drawdown for passive investors.
Effortless Alpha
What if I told you there's a stock-picking strategy so simple that it takes less than one hour per year to manage? This system has beaten every single UK fund manager over the past decade.
Imagine turning £100,000 into over £340,000 while the FTSE All-Share only managed £127,000. That is exactly what Stockopedia discloses here: Stockopedia's Backtested Strategy—It Destroyed the Index!.

Practical Checkpoint
Define the setup, entry and invalidation level before acting.
Compare the potential payoff with risk-reward planning.
Set the trade size using consistent position-sizing rules.
EMA Crossover Strategy
One of the studies we completed ourselves at Financial Wisdom is the EMA Crossover Strategy. This strategy is detailed in our article: Adapting to Market Volatility: Strategies & Tips.
This performance image of the EMA strategy below summarizes it well. Avoiding the most severe drawdowns is just one of its benefits.

Best Indicator?
Another great backtest study is found here: Best Trading Indicator To Build A Strategy Upon.
This time, we use a simple moving average. The equity curve in the image runs from 1960 through to 2020. It turned a £100,000 investment into over £5 million. More importantly, it did this with controlled drawdown. The strategy is backed by research and is so simple that it's easy to dismiss. This proves that complexity is not always the answer. The research study was completed by Meb Faber in 2013. It is a core strategy piece of billionaire trader Paul Tudor Jones.
Donchian Breakout System
A similar study was completed using the popular Donchian Channel breakout method. Creator Richard Donchian summarizes his concept well by saying:
“Research alone won’t ensure a profit. Your main goal should be to make money, not to get an A in How to Read a Balance Sheet.”
Chart Pattern Study
How about a study on 200,000 charts and certain chart patterns within them? This 10-year study reveals which chart patterns are the best to trade and when.
Timing The Market
What if I told you, you could time the market tops and bottoms with accuracy? By using the Relative Strength Divergence technique, we can. It has proven to do so from the periods we have looked at.
Evidence Check
Is the sample broad enough to include difficult markets?
Do the results include spreads, fees, slippage and failed signals?
Could hindsight, survivorship or selective examples explain the result?

Trend Following
Ever wondered if Trend Following actually works? This in-depth 22-year study provides a clear answer. The study was completed by a company called RDB Computing. They offer a high-level backtesting service used by hedge funds, charging over six figures for their services. The study was extensive.
Stop Loss Strategy
Have you been stuck in a sequence of losses by exiting your positions through a stop loss? You might keep asking yourself if it is the right thing to do. We have another in-depth research paper study completed by Lund University. The study reveals the most optimal percentage to use.
Past Bear Markets
In this video, we look at past bear markets. Anyone involved in the stock market, whether a trader or investor, could have taken simple actions to protect their wealth. We will discuss how we can do the same in the next bear market.
The average bear market decline over the past 70 years was 30.2%. Some of the largest falls reached 50% or more. The more we can do to avoid or even eliminate them, the better.
Putting it All Together
There is no better study than that of your own trading results. This assumes, of course, that you have a repeatable process with stringent rules. The final study I offer is my own trading strategy, which has real data going back 8 years. This is my equity curve:
(as of Dec 2025)

My approach was developed over the learnings I have studied and tested in the markets for over 30 years. I use weekly charts and look for breakouts on quality stocks with momentum in my favour, while offering low-risk structure.

Practical Limitations
Historical examples, interviews, backtests and indicator results are educational illustrations rather than forecasts. Outcomes depend on the market, timeframe, data, transaction costs, financing, taxes and execution assumptions. Test complete rules across varied conditions and define the maximum acceptable account risk before taking a position.
Put This Into Practice
These ideas become more useful when selection, entry, stop placement, position sizing and trade management form one repeatable process. The Financial Wisdom Trading Blueprint connects those decisions in a practical weekly framework.
